Belgium has lower taxes on tobacco than France or the UK; as Adinkerke is the closest Belgian town accessible to the French ferry ports, it attracts many French smokers and British booze cruisers every day to make the trip across the border to buy cheaper tobacco. Adinkerke has the unusual claim to fame of having the greatest number of tobacconists per capita of any area in Europe.

I live in Peterborough and do the tobacco run every 3 to 4 months. Generally go by ferry (check sea conditions first) with my car and find it so easy. Book it 1 or 2 days in advance to get the best price at the time. The most I have paid is £25 return for a car and 2 adults. Easy access to the ferry once in Dover (about 3 hrs from P'boro) with toilets and coffee available in the port.
The road from Calais to Adinkerque is generally busy and for the uninitiated can be a scary trip. If you can get a good deal from Dover to Dunkerque that is the best option. Only a few miles to Adinkerque from there and Pidou is on the way so you can top up on wine etc on the return. Only had 1 bad experience at Dover on the way back as Madam Hitler asked if I new the consequences of bringing illegal substances into the UK. Always get asked where I've been but not usually a prob. Keep your receipt from Belgium to prove where you bought the baccy.
All in all a good day out and I save loads of money. Don't just talk about it. Long live the cheap crossings Dave. I have been here several times over the last 7 years. It is very cheap to buy all your tobacco and cigarettes. We only ever buy a small amount of each, and we prefer tabs which give you more for cheaper. Take English pounds with you as this is cheaper than Euros and all the shops take Sterling.
I, too use Tobacco Real. They are slightly cheaper and have a huge range, swell as good value drinks and chocolates. There are sone pubs and a fish ad chip shop. There is a petrol station that also sells chocolates cheap. All staff speak English. All h shops are close to each other and shop around. Several have online price guides so you can check before you leave England.
An hour up the motorway is Bruges, which is stunning. I always drive there after my tobacco run and spend a day buying chocolates and enjoying the scenery.
I travel SeaFance as I can take a car and up to 5 people from just £14 return. If you sign up for their emails you can save an extra £2 each way.
I recommend the journey for anyone who wants to save money and get out of old Blighty for a day. Hello everybody, Having heard much about the town of Adinkerke in Belgium, and how cheap cigarettes and tobacco cost to buy there compared to the U.K.
I felt that the time was ripe for me to go on a 'tobacco run' for the day to see how things work out, and how much money it was actually possible to save.
